In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the TODAY Plaza is decked out in pink, thanks to an event hosted by breast cancer survivor Jill Martin. Jill’s clothing brand, By Jill Martin, is collaborating with the NBA and WNBA to raise awareness of breast cancer and genetic testing, specifically in relation to the BRCA gene mutation. The collaboration includes sherpas featuring pink NBA and WNBA logos, with proceeds going to the Basser Center for BRCA. The NBA and WNBA Lounger and Hoodie Collection will be available for purchase starting on October 1st.

To kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the NBA and WNBA provided sherpas with pink logos to TODAY show attendees on October 1st. The TODAY show aired a Pink Power special on the same day, featuring Jill Martin sharing her breast cancer journey, NBA and WNBA players discussing how the disease has impacted them, and information on genetic testing for cancer risk reduction. The plaza was filled with breast cancer survivors and their families, highlighting the importance of knowing one’s risk for breast cancer.

Jill’s breast cancer diagnosis in 2023 at Stage 2 was attributed to testing positive for a BRCA gene mutation, despite having clear mammogram results the same day as her diagnosis. Her father, rather than her mother, was found to have passed on the mutation, surprising her due to the primarily maternal history of breast cancer in her family. Since then, she has undergone a double mastectomy, breast reconstruction, removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes, chemotherapy, and radiation. Currently cancer-free, she is taking medications to reduce her risk of recurrence.

BRCA gene mutations, inherited from either parent, can increase the risk of various cancers, including breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer, as well as a higher likelihood of cancer developing at a younger age. Individuals with a family history of the mutation, Ashkenazi Jewish heritage, or a personal or family history of breast cancer before age 50 are at a higher risk of having a BRCA mutation. Those concerned about their risk can speak with a healthcare provider about genetic testing to determine if a BRCA mutation is present.

Breast cancer awareness and genetic testing are critical topics for Jill Martin, who shares her personal experience to highlight the importance of knowing one’s risk. The collaboration with the NBA and WNBA not only raises awareness but also supports the Basser Center for BRCA, contributing to research and education in the field. By making pink sherpa loungers available for purchase, the collaboration seeks to engage the public in supporting breast cancer awareness and genetic testing initiatives.

The Pink Power special on the TODAY show serves as an educational platform, featuring personal stories from survivors and athletes, as well as information on genetic testing to empower individuals to take control of their health. With efforts like these, the hope is to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and provide support for those facing a diagnosis of breast cancer or a genetic mutation that increases cancer risk. By sharing her journey and advocating for awareness, Jill Martin aims to make a positive impact in the fight against breast cancer.
