Asus has released an updated version of its Republic of Gamers Ally gaming handheld, the ROG Ally X, based on user feedback from the original device. While the new model retains the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor and 7-inch full-HD touch display found in the previous version, it also offers a range of improvements. These include a larger 1TB storage option and 24GB of system memory, as well as a doubled battery capacity of 80 Wh. The device has been redesigned with a more efficient cooling system, resulting in significant temperature drops during use. Additionally, the Ally X features enhanced handgrip ergonomics, a more precise D-pad, and sturdier joysticks for improved control.

Despite these enhancements, the price of the ROG Ally X has increased from $700 to $800, making it a more premium offering in the gaming handheld market. The device also continues to run on Windows 11, with no significant upgrades to the operating system or processor. However, the increased storage capacity, memory, and battery life may make it a more attractive option for gamers looking for a portable gaming solution. The inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 support and improved audio features, such as Dolby Atmos and AI noise-canceling technology, further enhance the overall gaming experience on the Ally X.

In terms of design changes, Asus has made adjustments to the handgrips, macro buttons, and control layout to improve usability and comfort during extended gaming sessions. The addition of two USB-C ports, including a Thunderbolt 4 port, offers greater connectivity options for peripherals and accessories. The weight of the device remains relatively light at under 1.5 pounds, despite the larger battery and improved cooling system. Overall, the Ally X aims to address the previous shortcomings of the original Ally model while delivering a more polished and feature-rich gaming handheld experience.

Asus has focused on enhancing key aspects of the ROG Ally X, such as storage, memory, battery life, and ergonomics, to appeal to gamers seeking a high-performance portable gaming device. While the price increase may deter some potential buyers, the improvements in hardware and design justify the higher cost for those looking for a premium gaming experience on the go. With preorder availability at Best Buy, the ROG Ally X represents Asus’s commitment to refining its gaming handheld offerings based on user feedback and market demands.
