You.com has introduced a new feature called Custom Assistants that allows users to create their own AI assistant for free using the same technology that powers ChatGPT. These assistants can be tailored to answer specific questions without the need for lengthy instructions. Users can choose between different large language models like GPT-4o, Llama 3, or Claude 3 Opus to power their Custom Assistant. To create a Custom Assistant, users simply need to click on More and then Add New, select the desired LLM, give the assistant a name, and specify how it should behave.

The launch of You.com as a competitor to Google in 2021 aimed to differentiate itself by providing a more personalized and secure search experience. The incorporation of AI into its features set it apart from other search engines. When ChatGPT was introduced in late 2022 with its interactive chatbot interface, it influenced the design of other AI chatbots, including a redesign of You.com in late 2023 that borrowed heavily from ChatGPT. Despite the innovation, breaking into the online search market remains challenging, as seen with the closure of Neeva, another AI search engine, due to fierce competition from Google. You.com faces tough competition from search engines like Bing and DuckDuckGo for a share of the remaining 10% of the market outside of Google’s dominance.
