Salvage crews have begun removing containers from the deck of the Dali cargo ship, which collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing it to collapse. The removal of the containers is a crucial step in reopening the shipping lane. Crews will continue to remove containers as weather permits, and they are progressing towards removing sections of the bridge across the ship’s bow to eventually allow it to move.

A total of 32 vessels have passed through temporary channels on either side of the wreckage as efforts continue to clear the debris and open the channel to larger commercial traffic. The Unified Command led by US Coast Guard Captain David O’Connell is focused on the main lines of effort to remove enough debris for the channel to be reopened. Salvage efforts are ongoing and will continue as weather permits.

The Dali cargo ship has been trapped under mangled steel in the Patapsco River since the accident on March 26, which resulted in the deaths of six workers. President Joe Biden visited the site to assess the damage and met with the families of the victims. The workers who lost their lives were immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Efforts to locate the remaining victims are ongoing as salvage operations continue.

Officials have established a temporary alternate channel for vessels involved in the cleanup and salvage operations. The Army Corps of Engineers aims to open a limited-access channel for barge container ships and some vessels carrying cars and farm equipment by the end of April. The goal is to restore normal capacity in Baltimore’s port by May 31. More than 50 salvage divers and 12 cranes are on site to assist in cutting out sections of the bridge and removing them from the waterway.

The removal of debris and containers from the Dali cargo ship is a challenging and time-consuming process that requires careful planning and coordination among salvage crews. The reopening of the shipping lane is vital for the movement of commercial traffic and restoring the port’s capacity. Efforts are ongoing to clear the wreckage and allow vessels to pass through the area safely.

The aftermath of the collision between the Dali cargo ship and the Francis Scott Key Bridge has left a significant impact on the region and the families of the victims. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support and resources to aid in the salvage and recovery operations. The determination and resilience of the salvage crews working to reopen the shipping lane highlight the importance of their efforts in restoring normalcy to the area.
