Wordle is a popular word puzzle game invented by software engineer Josh Wardle, who sold the game to The New York Times in 2022. In the game, players must work out a five-letter word within six attempts or fewer, with the help of a color-coded tile system. A green tile indicates a correct letter in the right place, a yellow tile signifies a correct letter in the wrong place, and a gray tile means the letter is not in the word at all. Wardle chose to use five-letter words for Wordle after testing different word lengths and attempts with the prototype version.

Each day, a new word puzzle appears at midnight in players’ respective time zones. The New York Times now allows subscribers access to more than 1,000 past Wordle puzzles from the official archive on the web and in the NYT Games app. This expansion aims to deepen the connection the community has with Wordle and with each other, according to Jonathan Knight, head of games at The New York Times.

To help players solve the daily Wordle challenge, Newsweek provides hints and clues. For example, in the case of Wordle #1,151, the clues included that the answer contained two vowels, had no repeated letters, was a verb, and started with the letter ‘N’. The final hint suggested it was something you might hear from a horse. The answer to that particular puzzle was “Neigh,” defined as “the prolonged cry of a horse” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Players who did not guess the correct word can try again when the game resets at midnight. In the meantime, they can also explore other popular online word puzzles such as Spellspire or Typochondria. Wordle has become a daily challenge for many players, offering a new puzzle to solve each day with the help of hints and a color-coded tile system. The game’s popularity continues to grow, with many players eagerly awaiting the release of each new puzzle on a daily basis.
