Hundreds of people gathered at a charity in Winnipeg for an Easter lunch, organized by Siloam Mission, an organization that helps people experiencing homelessness. The CEO, Tessa Blaikie Whitecloud, had been preparing for the event for two months, gathering 240 turkeys, 300 pounds of potatoes, and other ingredients. Within the first half-hour of the event, 750 plates had been filled with a traditional Easter meal including turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. However, Whitecloud emphasized that the meal was not just about the food but also about connecting with the promise of Easter and celebrating hope and renewal.
Alex Thomas, a senior support staff member at Siloam, noted that 70% of the people at the meal were familiar faces from the organization’s drop-in centre and nearby shelters. He highlighted the importance of the Easter lunch in recognizing the humanity of those experiencing homelessness and providing a space for people to come together, break down barriers, and connect on a human level. Despite the increased costs of this year’s meal due to cost inflation, donors stepped in to make it possible for Siloam to host the event and continue their daily meal services.
Whitecloud emphasized the ongoing need for volunteers to help with meal services at Siloam Mission. She encouraged individuals, groups, and corporate teams to volunteer in the kitchen on a regular basis, not just for special events like Easter. The charity relies on volunteers to help prepare and serve three meals a day to those in need. The Easter lunch was just one example of the community coming together to support and care for each other. The event was a testament to the generosity and compassion of both donors and volunteers who make it possible for Siloam Mission to continue their important work in helping those experiencing homelessness.
