A retired couple, Bev and John Martin, based in Florida, decided to travel the world during their retirement. They started by road tripping around the United States in an Airstream trailer, marking every state off their bucket list. After accomplishing this feat, they took things to the next level by selling their home and belongings to travel the world. Despite having five children and eight grandchildren, the Martins received support from their family for their decision.
The couple, aged 60 and 61, have visited numerous countries since November 2021, including Morocco, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Italy, and many more. They stay in Airbnb or hotels for short periods before moving on to the next location. Although they plan to slow down as they age, they have been able to explore new places and meet new friends along the way. Ukraine was a significant destination for them as John’s grandfather hailed from there and never returned after moving to the United States in the 1900s.
Currently in Cape Town, South Africa, with plans for a safari in April, the Martins have found Guatemala to be one of the most surprising and welcoming destinations. Despite warnings about safety, they enjoyed their visit to Lake Atitlán and the hospitality of the people. When asked what they might miss most about the United States, John mentioned home-cooked meals and dining at Cracker Barrel upon their return. He noted that a familiar setting and friendly service were comforting after their travels.
Their travel experiences have been made possible by years of saving money and living modestly. While they return home to see family twice a year, they have been immersed in the cultures of various countries, making new friends along the way. The couple expressed gratitude for the support and encouragement they have received from friends and family in pursuing their dream of global exploration. Despite some challenges and misconceptions about certain destinations, they have found joy in discovering new places and connecting with people from different backgrounds.
The Martins have chronicled their adventures on their blog, Retirement Travelers, sharing stories and photos from their travels. Their journey reflects a sense of adventure and openness to new experiences that have enriched their lives post-retirement. As they continue to explore the world, they cherish the memories and connections made along the way, while also acknowledging the importance of roots and familiarity that they look forward to returning to, even as they embrace the unknown and the excitement of future travels.
