After Iran launched over 300 missiles and drones at Israel, mostly thwarted by Israel’s defenses and allies in the region, attention has turned to how Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could respond. Experts argue that Israel is obligated to retaliate against Iran for this direct act of aggression, despite the failure of the Iranian attack. The Biden administration has reportedly urged Netanyahu to show restraint to prevent further conflict in the Middle East. However, many believe it is unlikely that Israel will simply absorb Tehran’s missile and drone strikes without a response.

There have been discussions of potential Israeli responses to Iran’s aggression, including a long-planned attack on Iran’s nuclear capabilities. This attack could involve F-35 stealth fighter jets hitting sites across Iran to eliminate air defenses and strike at nuclear facilities. Israel would need to ensure U.S. support for such a plan and clarify its strategic objectives. Military strikes are not the only option, as Israel could also retaliate against economic infrastructure or ports and refineries in Iran, depending on its goals.

Recent Israeli bombings of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon indicate Israel’s readiness to respond to threats from Iran’s proxies in the region. While a potential Israeli attack on Iran has been gamed out with various military capabilities, it remains unclear whether Israel will opt for a dramatic response. Retired Gen. David Petraeus noted that Israel has a range of options, including overt and covert military actions, as well as diplomatic and economic responses from the U.S. and other G7 countries in a coordinated effort.

Experts agree that any Israeli response must have a clear strategy for victory, whether it be a decapitation strike against regime leadership, a defanging strike against long-range assets, or a punishment strike targeting the energy and oil sectors in Iran. The complexity of the situation and Iran’s history of pursuing nuclear capabilities add uncertainty to how Israel will proceed. While some believe an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities may be imminent, Israel remains cautious about escalating tensions in the region. Regardless, the Iranian attack has heightened tensions in the Middle East and underscored the need for careful deliberation in crafting a response that will achieve Israel’s strategic objectives.
