As the first and possibly only debate between President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris approaches, it is important to reflect on Trump’s previous debates with Hillary Clinton in 2016 to understand the challenges both candidates face. In their three debates, Trump depicted Clinton as a proponent of high taxes, open borders, and a continuation of the failures of the current administration. Clinton maintained composure and used a strategy of laughter to deflect Trump’s attacks, highlighting her experience and policy proposals.

During the first debate, Trump began cordially, referring to Clinton as “Secretary Clinton” and agreeing with her statements on affordable child care. However, as the debate progressed, he became more combative, casting Clinton as a “typical politician” with no accomplishments. Clinton responded by laughing off Trump’s insults and dismissing his claims, maintaining her confidence throughout the debate.

The second debate was even more contentious, with Trump inviting women who had accused former President Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct to the event. He attacked Clinton for her husband’s actions and her handling of emails, while Clinton remained composed and directed viewers to fact-check her opponent’s false allegations. Trump also physically intimidated Clinton by looming behind her during the debate, a gesture that drew criticism and highlighted the gender dynamics at play.

In the final debate, allegations of Russian election interference dominated the discussion. Clinton accused Trump of being a “Russian puppet,” which visibly unnerved him. Trump, known for his interruptive and quipping style, projected strength and frequently interjected to challenge Clinton’s statements. Despite her composed responses, Clinton struggled to rattle Trump, who was able to redirect the focus of the discussion to his advantage.

Throughout the debates, Trump demonstrated his skill at controlling the narrative and engaging in verbal sparring with his opponents. While Clinton tried to remain above the fray and respond with facts, Trump used tactics like interrupting, quipping, and projecting confidence to dominate the discussions. As Trump and Harris prepare to face off, it remains to be seen how their debate will unfold and what strategies they will employ to gain the upper hand.
