The crypto bull market is contributing to a resurgence of interest in non-fungible tokens (NFTs), with the NFT sector experiencing a 50% surge in trading volume and generating $3.9 billion in revenue in the first quarter of this year. This represents the strongest quarter for NFTs since Q1 2023. Web3 quests, which blend gaming elements with digital assets, are gaining traction as they drive user engagement by allowing players to earn digital assets as rewards as they progress through a narrative. Coachella recently introduced Coachella Quests, a loyalty game powered by Avalanche, that rewards festival-goers for participating in various festival activities.

Coachella Quests provides fans with the opportunity to engage in on-site and virtual challenges, earning digital stamps and token points called “XP” that can unlock exclusive prizes and festival experiences. The product was designed to offer a seamless user experience for web2 consumers while utilizing blockchain technology on the backend to authenticate and provide ownership of digital items. Web3 quests are already being embraced by crypto natives, with games like Crypto: The Game offering immersive experiences for players to compete in daily challenges and win prizes powered by Ethereum Layer-2 technology.

While Web3 quests can enhance fan engagement, user data is not collected, offering a layer of protection for personal information. This is significant in light of past data breaches at events like Coachella, where user data was compromised and sold on the dark web. With Web3 quests, only on-chain data from NFTs is accessed, ensuring user privacy. However, challenges related to incorporating quests into major events, such as making the tools accessible to non-crypto natives, may hinder mainstream adoption. Unlock Protocol noted that rewards for completing quests could potentially become more valuable in the future, driving increased engagement among event attendees.

Despite the challenges, Coachella remains optimistic about the mainstream appeal of Coachella Quests, choosing to abstract away from the technical aspects of Web3 and focus on creating a fun and engaging experience for fans. The event also partnered with NFT marketplace OpenSea to offer fans non-fungible token keepsakes, known as Coachella Keepsakes, which come with festival tickets and exclusive onsite and online benefits. The collaboration with OpenSea is ongoing, and future offerings connected to special merchandise access from Coachella are planned for mid-April. Ultimately, by integrating Web3 technology and introducing interactive elements like Web3 quests, Coachella aims to expand its footprint in the digital space and offer fans a unique and engaging festival experience.
