In the event of a carjacking, a car is stolen from the driver through the use of force, threats, or intimidation while the owner is inside the vehicle. This situation can quickly become dangerous for the victim. Sergeant Diogo Mello of the East Providence Police Department in Rhode Island provided safety tips to Fox News Digital on what to do if you find yourself in a carjacking situation and preventative measures you can take to protect yourself. It is important to remain calm and avoid displaying combativeness towards the criminal if you are being carjacked. Cooperation and separating yourself from the carjacker and the vehicle are crucial. Gathering information about the suspect, such as physical features, can help law enforcement identify the individual later on. It is advised to comply with the carjacker’s demands, with the exception of if they try to force you into the vehicle, in which case you should avoid going with them as it is unlikely to end well.

To prevent becoming a victim of a carjacking or other crimes, remain aware of your surroundings. Being vigilant is essential to avoid becoming a target for criminals. Avoid distractions, such as cell phones, that can make you oblivious to what is happening around you. Always be able to see and hear everything around you, especially when walking or driving. Tips provided by Mello to stay safe while on the road include being aware of your surroundings, keeping windows up and doors locked, avoiding driving alone, leaving enough room to maneuver around other cars at stops, parking in well-lit areas closest to business entrances, and utilizing tracking or GPS software in your vehicle for added security.

Certain places, such as shopping plazas, garages, convenience stores, and gas stations, are more prone to carjackings. To reduce the risk of a carjacking, park in well-lit areas closest to the business entrance where witnesses are more likely to see any criminal activity. Risk factors for carjacking also include the time of day, with most carjackings occurring from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Neglecting to lock your vehicle, leaving it running while stopping, and the make, model, and value of the vehicle can increase vulnerability to carjacking. Taking preventative measures, such as parking in well-lit areas and being cautious about the time and location, can reduce the risk of falling victim to a carjacking. Utilizing tracking or GPS software in your vehicle can also provide added security, ensuring the safety of your vehicle in case of a theft.
