Danish authorities issued a warning on Thursday due to a technical error on a navy missile that could potentially launch unintentionally, but not explode, resulting in fragments falling in Denmark waters. The Harpoon missile on board the Danish frigate HDMS Niels Juel experienced a technical problem during a test at the Korsoer naval base. The military stated that the missile is live, but only the booster is activated, and there is no immediate danger of explosion.

The launch vehicle’s booster cannot be disabled at this time, raising concerns that the missile could be launched and travel several kilometers away. The Danish Maritime Authority reported that a military drill was taking place in the Storebaelt strait between the islands of Zeeland and Funen. Ships in the area have been notified to wait until the issue is resolved, and the airspace has been closed as a precaution. The danger area is estimated to be up to 7 kilometers from Korsoer at a height of approximately 1 kilometer above sea level.

Despite the potential risk, the operator of the bridge and tunnel link across the Storebaelt stated that there was no threat to road and train traffic. The incident triggered memories of a similar event in 1982 when a missile from a Danish frigate misfired during a drill, traveling 34 kilometers before exploding. The explosion destroyed four nearby unoccupied summer cottages and caused minor damage to 130 buildings in the area. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from this incident.

The Danish armed forces assured the public that the missile in question posed no immediate danger of exploding or reaching farther than the booster rocket could lift it. While the situation is being monitored closely, there is ongoing concern about the potential for the missile to launch unintentionally. The military emphasized that there was no danger to the bridge and tunnel link across the Storebaelt, as the threat was primarily limited to the waters surrounding Denmark.

Authorities have taken necessary precautions by notifying ships in the area and closing off airspace to ensure the safety of individuals and infrastructure. The incident comes at a time of heightened tension globally, with concerns about military threats and unintentional missile launches. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with military drills and the need for stringent safety protocols to prevent accidents and reduce the impact on surrounding areas.

As the situation unfolds, Danish authorities continue to work on resolving the technical error to prevent any further risks. The incident highlights the complexities and potential hazards involved in military exercises and underscores the importance of rigorous safety measures. While no injuries have been reported in this recent incident, it serves as a wake-up call for improved protocols and oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.
