Republican Vince Fong of California was recently sworn into Congress after winning a special election to complete the remainder of the term of former U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Fong, a former member of the California State Assembly, was backed by former President Donald Trump and McCarthy, who watched the ceremony in person from the House floor. With Fong’s swearing-in, Republicans now have a 218-213 majority in Congress.

During his campaign, Fong heard from constituents in his Central Valley-based district about the need for Congress to address issues such as the U.S.-Mexico border, the rising cost of everyday essentials, and community safety. He emphasized the importance of finding solutions and delivering results to the American people. Fong’s victory in the special election came after defeating fellow Republican Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux in a tightly contested race in the state’s farm belt.

McCarthy, who previously served as U.S. House Speaker, made history as the only speaker to be voted out of the job. Following that vote, McCarthy chose to resign rather than serve out the remainder of his term. Despite this, he has continued to play a significant role in promoting Fong’s candidacy, with a political action committee linked to McCarthy providing substantial financial support to Fong’s campaign. Fong expressed his gratitude to McCarthy, referring to him as a mentor and friend who has long served the constituents of the Central Valley and the nation.

Fong’s swearing-in comes at a crucial time for House Republicans as they prepare for their next big legislative fight. With a narrow majority in Congress, Republicans will need to work together to advance their agenda and address key issues facing the country. Fong’s focus on finding solutions and delivering results aligns with the priorities of many Americans, and his presence in Congress will likely have a significant impact on the legislative process in the coming months.

As he settles into his new role in Congress, Fong has pledged to prioritize the concerns and needs of his constituents while working to address pressing national issues. With the backing of influential figures such as former President Trump and Kevin McCarthy, Fong is well-positioned to make a positive impact in Congress and help shape the direction of the Republican Party. His commitment to finding solutions and delivering results reflects a desire to make a meaningful difference for the American people and address the challenges facing the nation.
