Maritime aid deliveries to Gaza were able to resume after a US-built temporary pier was repaired by US Central Command. The delivery of nearly 500 metric tons of aid was the first since the pier broke apart last month. This delivery occurred on the same day that the Israeli military conducted a hostage rescue operation in Gaza, resulting in casualties and injuries. CENTCOM clarified that the pier, called Joint Logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS), was not used in the rescue operation.

The temporary pier in Gaza was specifically built to assist in delivering urgently needed lifesaving aid to the region. Despite the challenges faced, including damage to the pier due to heavy seas, it had already facilitated the delivery of 1,000 metric tons of aid to Gaza in less than two weeks of operation. Planning around Israel’s operations, determining transportation of the aid from the pier into Gaza, and dealing with logistical issues such as sea and weather conditions were all obstacles that had to be overcome.

Eight months into the Israel-Hamas war, human rights groups have expressed concerns about the dire living conditions in Gaza. The United Nations issued a warning in May about a potential famine spreading in Gaza, threatening the lives of more than 1 million people, half of the population. While Israeli officials claim there is no limit on aid entering Gaza, the UN has accused them of imposing unlawful restrictions on relief operations, including blockades on land routes, communication blackouts, and air strikes.

The US has been actively involved in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza through air drops in collaboration with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. These air drops were temporarily suspended due to military operations in the north of Gaza, but are expected to resume in the coming days. The US has been working to overcome challenges and ensure that aid reaches those in need in Gaza, despite the ongoing conflict and obstacles faced in the region.

Overall, the situation in Gaza remains critical, with concerns about famine and starvation increasing as the conflict continues. The resumption of maritime aid deliveries, along with planned air drops, are important steps in providing assistance to the vulnerable population in Gaza. The collaboration between different organizations and countries, despite challenges, demonstrates a commitment to humanitarian efforts in the region. The ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza require continued support and efforts to alleviate suffering and provide much-needed aid to those in need.
