Actress Danielle Fishel is currently recovering from surgery after being diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer. She underwent two lumpectomy surgeries to remove the cancer, with no evidence of disease after the procedures. However, she will soon begin hormone therapy and possibly radiation, and will have to undergo regular monitoring to ensure the cancer does not return. Fishel emphasizes the importance of early detection, as her cancer was caught early due to annual mammograms.

Fishel’s mammogram earlier this year revealed abnormalities that led to a biopsy confirming the cancer. Her diagnosis of stage 0 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a high-grade form of cancer found in the milk duct, was a shock as she had no symptoms leading up to the diagnosis. She stresses the importance of regular health screenings, as early detection played a crucial role in her treatment plan. Fishel urges others to prioritize their health and not delay important medical appointments.

Following her diagnosis, Fishel faced the challenge of breaking the news to her husband, who had lost both of his parents to cancer. The emotional toll of managing his reaction while dealing with her own diagnosis was challenging. Telling her parents was also difficult, as they were not expecting a cancer diagnosis given her outward appearance of health. Fishel decided not to disclose the cancer to her young children, instead explaining her surgery as having a “boo boo” that needed time to heal.

After sharing her diagnosis on her podcast and social media, Fishel received an outpouring of support from coworkers, fans, and survivors within the cancer community. She credits her strong support system and the ability to continue working as a director for helping her stay grounded throughout the experience. Choosing a lumpectomy over a double mastectomy allowed for a quicker recovery, enabling her to return to work on a project she was passionate about just a month after her diagnosis.

Staying busy with work, focusing on her children, and advocating for regular health exams has helped Fishel maintain a positive mindset during her cancer journey. She emphasizes the importance of self-care and early detection, hoping to inspire others to prioritize their health. Despite the challenges she has faced, Fishel remains grateful for the love and support she has received from her community and encourages others to seek help and support when facing a difficult diagnosis.

In sharing her story, Fishel hopes to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of regular screenings. She reminds people to not ignore potential warning signs and to seek medical attention promptly. By opening up about her journey, Fishel aims to provide support and encouragement to others facing similar challenges. Her positive attitude and resilience in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration to those navigating their own health battles.
