The Ukrainian lieutenant was stationed on the eastern front, commanding an artillery unit armed with American-provided M777 howitzers. His unit, like millions of Ukrainians, had been eagerly awaiting news of whether the U.S. would approve military assistance for Ukraine, which had been delayed for months. The lieutenant, identified only as Oleksandar, received the news that an aid package had finally been approved by Congress, bringing relief and gratitude across Ukraine. The $60 billion assistance package is expected to be signed by President Biden soon, with the Pentagon stating that weapons could start being sent to Ukraine within days.

Since American aid ceased flowing into Ukraine, Russia has seized significant territory and strengthened its arsenal with missiles and drones from Iran and North Korea, as well as economic support from China. Russia has also managed to replace troops killed or wounded in battle, with the Russian army now 15% larger than before the invasion of Ukraine. Despite this, Ukraine has managed to hold off major Russian advances, but faces ongoing challenges from Russian forces, including long-range drone and missile strikes aimed at causing extensive damage to the country’s infrastructure.

The new American military assistance is expected to have a significant impact on Ukraine’s ability to defend itself, but it may take some time before the aid can reach the front lines. Ukrainian commanders and military analysts caution that it will likely be weeks before the effects of the assistance are felt directly in the fight against Russian forces. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to advance in certain areas, threatening key territory and cities in eastern Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the decision to approve military assistance, stating that it would benefit both soldiers on the front line and civilians who have been affected by Russian attacks. The Kremlin responded to the aid package with anger and threats, with officials warning of the potential consequences of the assistance for Russia. Ukrainian brigade commander Lt. Col. Oleksii Khilchenko expressed gratitude for the new weapons, noting that they would allow Ukrainian soldiers to fight more effectively and with increased courage, ultimately helping Ukraine to end the war.

The decision to approve the military assistance also lifted the spirits of volunteers who have supported Ukrainian soldiers throughout the conflict. Olena Detsel, founder of the volunteer organization Three in a Canoe, expressed relief at the news of American support, emphasizing that it shows Ukraine is not alone in its fight. The aid package, while late in coming, offers hope to Ukraine in its ongoing struggle against Russian aggression, providing essential weapons and resources to bolster its defenses and save lives on the front lines.
