Ukraine is investigating claims that the carelessness of its military units allowed a Russian incursion into the northeast of the country. The State Bureau of Investigation has opened an inquiry into how the 125th Brigade and other units organized their defenses in the Kharkiv region, following a new offensive by Moscow’s troops on May 10. The court documents revealed that the units did not properly organize the defense of positions, leading to the loss of positions, military equipment, and personnel. A total of 28 people, including high-ranking officials, were implicated in the criminal offense.

Ukrainian military commander Denys Yaroslavskyi stated that the lack of preparedness on the part of Ukrainian forces was responsible for the Russian breakthrough in Kharkiv. He noted that there was no first line of defense, allowing the Russians to easily advance without encountering resistance. Yaroslavskyi suggested that the situation was the result of either negligence or corruption, describing it as a betrayal. Ukrainian lawmakers claimed that the U.S. ban on using Western weapons against Russian targets hindered their ability to defend against the incursion, as they were unable to use long-range missile systems like the Army Tactical Missile Systems ATACMS.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called for an end to the restrictions on the use of Western weapons in the conflict, stating that allies should consider lifting some of the prohibitions in place to prevent escalation. German lawmaker Anton Hofreiter supported this stance, noting that international law permits a state under attack to target military objectives in the aggressor’s country. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials lobbied Washington to allow the use of long-range missile systems to target Russian positions in occupied Crimea, in an effort to push back against the advancing Russian forces.

The investigation into the neglect of Ukrainian military units in organizing their defenses in Kharkiv raises concerns about the effectiveness of the country’s military leadership and preparedness. The failure to adequately defend the region allowed Russian troops to make significant advances and capture positions, resulting in the loss of military equipment and personnel. The involvement of high-ranking officials in the criminal offense underscores the seriousness of the situation, as Ukraine faces ongoing threats from Russian forces in the region.

The allegations of negligence and betrayal in the handling of the defense in Kharkiv point to systemic issues within the Ukrainian military that need to be addressed. The lack of a first line of defense and the failure to properly organize positions highlight the vulnerabilities that allowed Russian forces to infiltrate Ukrainian territory. The insistence on using Western weapons to counter the incursion demonstrates the importance of international support in defending Ukraine against Russian aggression, as the country continues to struggle to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The outcome of the investigation will likely have implications for Ukraine’s military strategy and preparedness in future conflicts with Russia.
