Turkey and Israel have announced trade barriers against each other amidst deteriorating relations due to the ongoing war in Gaza. Turkey, a critic of Israel’s military actions in the region, announced restrictions on exports of 54 products to Israel, including aluminum, steel, construction products, jet fuel, and chemical fertilizers. In response, Israel said it would ban products from Turkey. This move comes after Israel barred Turkish military cargo planes from delivering aid to Gaza, prompting vows from Turkey to take action until a ceasefire is declared and aid can flow uninterrupted.

Critics accuse Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government of engaging in double standards by condemning Israel while maintaining profitable trade relations with the country. Erdogan, an outspoken critic of Israel since taking office in 2003, has denounced Israel’s actions in Gaza as war crimes and genocide. He has also expressed support for the Hamas militant group, which Israel, the United States, and the European Union consider a terrorist organization. In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz accused Erdogan of sacrificing Turkey’s economic interests for his support of “Hamas murderers,” contacting US organizations to stop investing in Turkey and importing Turkish goods.

Domestic political considerations may be behind Turkey’s decision to impose trade restrictions on Israel, according to analysts. Erdogan’s ruling party, facing pressure after setbacks in local elections, may be trying to rally support by taking a tough stance against Israel. This move could damage bilateral trade between the two countries, especially if Israel responds with its own trade restrictions. Turkish exports to Israel were valued at $5.4 billion in 2023, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute. In recent months, Turkish authorities have arrested dozens of people suspected of spying for Israel, mostly on Palestinians living in Turkey.

Turkey and Israel had normalized ties in 2022 by appointing ambassadors to their respective countries, following years of tension. However, the current trade barriers and diplomatic strain reflect a worsening relationship between the two nations. Erdogan’s government is facing criticism at home for its handling of the situation, with calls to halt trade with Israel growing louder. While Erdogan has been a vocal critic of Israel for years, the recent escalation in tensions could impact economic relations between the two countries. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and if further measures will be taken by either side in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
