Former President Donald Trump has delayed announcing his running mate choice until the start of the Republican National Convention on July 15, despite previously indicating he would do so closer to the convention. Traditionally, the vice presidential nominee is confirmed on the penultimate night of the convention, which in this case would be July 17. Trump, 77, has not provided concrete details on who his VP may be, but has mentioned several potential candidates, including Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, JD Vance, and Elise Stefanik. However, he has refused to narrow down his choices, stating that there are many people who would do a fantastic job.

During an interview, Trump also discussed his former rival Nikki Haley, who recently announced that she will be voting for him in November. Although Haley had kept quiet about supporting Trump after dropping out of the 2024 presidential race in March, she ultimately decided to back him due to her belief that President Biden has been a “catastrophe.” Trump praised Haley’s capabilities and expressed his appreciation for her support, but clarified that she is not in the running to be his running mate. The long list of potential VP candidates also includes Sen. Tim Scott and former Hawaii Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, among others.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum revealed that Trump had mentioned there could be up to 50 people on the list of running mate contenders, further adding to the speculation surrounding Trump’s VP choice. Despite the rumors and potential contenders, Trump has remained tight-lipped about his top choices, stating that there are many qualified individuals who could serve as his running mate. The delay in announcing his running mate has left many wondering who will ultimately be selected to join Trump on the Republican ticket for the 2024 election campaign.

Trump’s decision to wait until the convention to announce his running mate has deviated from the usual timeline for vice presidential nominations. By pushing back the announcement, Trump has added an element of suspense and speculation to the selection process, fueling interest and debate among both supporters and critics. As the convention approaches, the focus will likely shift towards Trump’s eventual choice and the impact it may have on his chances in the upcoming election. With a diverse list of potential candidates, Trump’s running mate selection will be closely watched and analyzed by political observers and voters alike.
