Former President Donald Trump recently released a video on his Truth Social platform, where he spread misinformation about abortion in an effort to garner support for his candidacy in the 2024 election. Trump falsely accused Democrats of supporting abortion up to and even after the ninth month, claiming that they want to “execute babies.” This dangerous and misleading rhetoric is part of a long-standing strategy by anti-abortion conservatives to demonize their opponents and rally their base.

Despite Trump’s claims, the reality is that late-term abortions are extremely rare in the United States, accounting for less than 1% of all abortions in 2020, according to the CDC. These procedures are typically performed in cases where severe fetal anomalies or life-threatening conditions necessitate it, and are not taking place at the moment of birth as Trump and other Republicans suggest. By oversimplifying and sensationalizing the issue of abortion, Trump is attempting to manipulate voters and distract from his controversial policies.

This is not the first time Trump has made baseless accusations about Democrats and abortion. Throughout his presidency and 2020 campaign, he has spread false information about abortion procedures and accused his political opponents of supporting the killing of babies. In 2019, he falsely claimed that Democrats were in favor of “executing babies after birth,” in reference to a failed Senate bill called the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.” Democrats have refuted these claims, stating that existing laws already protect newborns.

Democrats and reproductive rights advocates have pushed back against Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric, emphasizing the importance of protecting women’s reproductive freedom. Senator Tim Kaine criticized Trump for supporting measures that criminalize women and undermine their rights, stating that reproductive freedom should not be subject to the whims of legislators. Despite Trump’s attempts to paint Democrats as extremists on the issue of abortion, the majority of Americans support the right to choose and believe that access to reproductive healthcare should be protected.

In the lead-up to the 2024 election, Trump’s unsubstantiated claims about abortion serve to further polarize an already contentious issue. By spreading misinformation and stoking fear among his supporters, he hopes to solidify his base of anti-abortion conservatives and rally opposition to his political opponents. However, it is crucial for voters to critically evaluate the information they receive and seek out accurate, evidence-based sources when forming their opinions on complex issues like abortion. Misinformation only serves to undermine public discourse and erode trust in our political institutions.
