Former President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, calling him a “total flake” and one of the worst senators in the United States Senate. Trump criticized Cassidy for being disloyal, especially after the senator was one of only seven Republicans who voted to convict Trump after his second impeachment. Trump accused Cassidy of betraying him and suggested that Louisiana did not need Cassidy because they had him to protect them.

Trump took to Truth Social to unleash a series of derogatory comments aimed at Cassidy, calling him a “lamebrain” and saying that he had been too preoccupied with other matters to think about Cassidy until now. The former president also claimed that Cassidy is now shunned in his own state as a disloyal lightweight. While it remains unclear what prompted Trump to attack Cassidy, the former president has criticized him before, referring to him as “Wacky Bill” in a statement released in October 2021.

Cassidy, a medical doctor whose current Senate term ends in January 2027, has been vocal in expressing doubts about Trump’s ability to secure the GOP nomination and win a general election. He has warned that Trump’s legal woes could pose a liability and urged the former president to drop out of the 2024 race. Despite Cassidy’s criticisms, Trump had a smooth run in the primaries and secured the necessary delegate count for the GOP nomination, setting the stage for a rematch with President Joe Biden in the upcoming November election.

In his series of posts on Truth Social, Trump lambasted Cassidy for his perceived disloyalty and lack of intelligence, insisting that he is not someone anyone would want to be in a foxhole with. The former president’s remarks reflect the ongoing divisions within the Republican Party, particularly between those who continue to support Trump and those who have spoken out against him. Cassidy’s willingness to challenge Trump’s political future and express doubts about his electability has put him in the line of fire from the former president and his supporters.

Despite Trump’s attacks, Cassidy has remained steadfast in his position, maintaining that Trump’s losses in the House, Senate, and presidency during his four years in office could hinder his chances of securing a general election victory. The senator has also raised concerns about Trump’s legal troubles, particularly his federal classified-documents case, which Cassidy described as being “almost a slam dunk” for the prosecution. As Trump gears up for the presidential election in November, his clash with Cassidy underscores the ongoing power struggle within the GOP and the challenges it faces in unifying behind a single candidate.
