The proposal for a global tax on billionaires has been gaining traction among some members of the G20, but the U.S. has expressed opposition to the idea. The G20 is a group of twenty of the world’s largest economies that meet regularly to discuss global policies on various issues. The proposed tax would require billionaires to pay a 2% tax on their wealth each year, with the goal of raising $250 billion to fight poverty and economic inequality. However, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has stated that the U.S. does not support the idea of a global tax on billionaires, preferring a focus on progressive taxation instead.

Other countries like Germany, South Africa, and Spain have signaled some support for the proposal, which would target the world’s 3,000 billionaires, most of whom reside in the U.S., China, and India. The tax on global wealth is seen as a way to prevent the wealthy from simply fleeing to other countries to avoid taxation. The Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has also proposed streamlining tax issues, including Pillars 1 and 2, to address global tax challenges and avoid a race to lower corporate tax rates.

Support for the billionaire’s tax has come from figures like Nobel Prize-winning economist Esther Duflo and Brazil’s Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad. Duflo emphasized the importance of billionaires paying their fair share, while Haddad highlighted the need for international cooperation on taxation issues. The Patriotic Millionaires, a group of high-net-worth business leaders and investors, have also voiced support for the tax, calling for billionaires to pay their fair share and for Yellen to reconsider her opposition to the proposal.

As discussions around the billionaire’s tax continue to unfold, it will be interesting to see how the conversation evolves leading up to the next G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024. The proposal, informally referred to as Pillar 3, aims to address economic inequality and raise funds to support poverty alleviation efforts. With growing attention on the issue, the debate over taxing the wealthy at a global level is likely to intensify in the coming months.
