Trader Joe’s has issued a recall of approximately 653,000 Mango Tangerine Scented Candles across the United States due to a safety risk caused by an unexpected burn pattern. The candles were found to have a flame that can spread from the wick to the wax, resulting in a larger flame than expected and posing a fire hazard. The recall was initiated after the discovery of this issue by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The specific candles affected by the recall are 5.7-ounce Mango Tangerine Scented Candles with white-colored wax, a cotton wick, and an SKU number of 56879 on the bottom. These candles were sold by Trader Joe’s in June 2024. Each year, candles are responsible for causing approximately 5,910 home fires nationwide, according to data from the National Fire Protection Association. This highlights the importance of addressing potential safety hazards associated with candles.

Individuals who have purchased the recalled Mango Tangerine Scented Candle are advised not to use it and to either dispose of the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s store for a full cash refund of $4. Alternatively, customers can fill out an online form to receive a $4 Trader Joe’s gift card by mail, but they may be required to provide a receipt or a photo of the candle. The recall process is aimed at ensuring the safety of consumers and preventing any potential incidents related to the faulty candles.

While the official recall date issued by the CPSC is August 15, Trader Joe’s indicates that the candles were initially recalled in June. However, the company has not disclosed the total number of candles sold or whether there have been any incident reports related to the defective candles. The CPSC, on the other hand, has received 14 incident reports of high flames from the candles, which resulted in three cases of minor property damage and two instances of minor burns. This underscores the importance of promptly addressing safety risks associated with consumer products.

Trader Joe’s is committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its customers, and the recall of the Mango Tangerine Scented Candle underscores this commitment. By taking proactive measures to address the safety risk posed by the unexpected burn pattern in the candles, the company aims to prevent any potential fire hazards and protect consumers from harm. It is essential for consumers to heed the recall notice, discontinue the use of the affected candles, and follow the instructions provided for returning the product or seeking a refund to minimize the risk of any incidents. The company’s response to the issue reflects its dedication to prioritizing consumer safety and maintaining the trust of its customers.
