Expedia has released its list of top ‘detour destinations’ for 2025, with 63 per cent of travelers expressing interest in visiting lesser-known, less crowded destinations for their next trip. The company aims to encourage travelers to explore alternative destinations, aside from the popular tourist hotspots that contribute to overtourism. Three European cities made the list of top alternative destinations, including Reims in France, Brescia in Italy, and Girona in Spain. These cities offer unique cultural experiences, historic sites, and delicious cuisine away from the crowds.

Reims, often hailed as France’s unofficial champagne capital, is located just 45 minutes from Paris. The city is known for its champagne production, with many famous champagne houses such as Veuve Clicquot and Taittinger. Visitors can explore the underground caves and tunnels where champagne is aged, dating back to Roman times. Above ground, Reims boasts the stunning Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, a UNESCO-designated site where French kings were crowned. Brescia, located in Lombardy, Italy, offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of Milan. The city has significant Roman ruins, a hilltop castle, and numerous art galleries, along with proximity to beautiful lakes and vineyards.

Girona, located just 40 minutes from Barcelona, is hailed as Spain’s architectural hidden gem. The city features a mix of architectural styles, including a walled medieval quarter, Roman fortress ruins, and Modernista villas. Visitors can stroll along the Pont de les Peixateries Velles bridge for stunning views and explore unique museums like the Museu del Cinema. In addition to European destinations, Expedia’s list includes alternative cities in North America, Australasia, the Middle East, and Asia. Cozumel in Mexico, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara in California, and Canmore in Canada are among the recommended detour destinations.

Fukuoka in Japan is known for its friendly atmosphere, cherry blossoms, seafood, and cultural festivals, while Krabi in Thailand boasts a stunning coastline, rock climbing opportunities, and island-hopping adventures. Waikato in New Zealand, just a short distance from Auckland, offers natural beauty, black-sand beaches, river-rafting, and the famous glow worm caves of Waitomo. These alternative destinations provide travelers with a chance to explore less crowded, unique locations while supporting local economies and avoiding the negative impacts of overtourism. Expedia’s recommendations aim to inspire travelers to step off the beaten path and discover hidden gems around the world.
