The Democratic National Convention saw a plethora of leading Democrats paying homage to left-wing megadonor Alex Soros, who showcased his influence over the party by flaunting photos with party powerbrokers and rising stars on social media. The photos were taken from an elite skybox at the United Center in Chicago, where top donors paid up to $5 million to watch the proceedings. Mocked by a Republican strategist as a young billionaire flaunting his collection of politicians, Soros was accompanied by his fiancée, Huma Abedin, a former aide to Hillary Clinton and ex-wife of Anthony Weiner. They met with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, dubbed the party’s vice presidential nominee, during the convention.

During President Biden’s speech, Soros was in the company of former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Eric Swalwell, and Rep. Ruben Gallego. On another night, Soros mingled with former President Barack Obama and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has received substantial donations from him over the years. He also praised Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett as a rising star of the party. Other politicians featured in photos with Soros at the convention included Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Soros also interacted with top New York leaders like Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a long-time friend who has received millions in donations from Soros. Both Alex and his father, George Soros, are among the most significant fundraisers for the Democratic Party, with George donating over $175 million during the 2022 midterms. A nonprofit founded by George Soros contributed at least another $60 million for Democrats in 2024. Alex currently chairs the family’s Open Society Foundations, a philanthropy that supports radical left-wing causes globally. Locally, Soros and his allies have heavily invested in installing far-left district attorneys in major American cities who prioritize criminal justice reform over prosecution.

In 2020, Alex Soros contributed over $720,000 to the Biden Victory Fund, making him one of the fund’s top donors. While he has not yet made a similar-sized contribution for the 2024 campaign, his presence at the convention suggests that his wallets may open again in support of Democratic causes. Criticized by Republican Senator Roger Marshall as a part of the out-of-touch rich elite that dominates the new Democratic Party, Soros’s influence and financial contributions continue to shape politics within the party. His involvement in supporting the campaigns of Democratic candidates through donations and strategic investments in key races, such as district attorney elections, showcases his commitment to advancing progressive causes both nationally and globally.

Alex Soros’s actions and interactions with high-profile Democratic leaders at the national convention underscore his significant influence within the party and its political landscape. At a time when political donations and endorsements play a crucial role in shaping policy decisions and electoral outcomes, his financial contributions and strategic investments reflect a broader trend of wealthy donors exerting influence over political processes and agendas. The close ties between Soros, his family, and leading Democratic figures highlight the complexities of money in politics and the power dynamics that underlie political decision-making in the United States. As the Democratic Party continues to navigate its internal dynamics and ideological direction, the role of megadonors like Alex Soros in shaping its future trajectory remains a subject of ongoing scrutiny and debate.
