CNET conducted tests on a variety of cordless vacuums to determine their effectiveness in cleaning different types of soil. They used a mix of play sand and landscaping sand to simulate small particle size, uncooked black rice to emulate larger dirt particles, and clippings sourced from a pet groomer to test pet hair removal. Each vacuum underwent at least three runs on each floor type, with separate tests for sand and rice suction power, totaling at least 18 tests per vacuum. The results were measured by weighing the vacuum’s dust bin before and after each run to calculate the percentage of dirt and debris pickup and the average amount of soil removed.
The testing revealed that the Dyson V15 Detect was the top overall cleaner in the sand tests, while the Samsung Jet 90 outperformed it significantly on thick, plushy midpile carpet. The Jet 90 was able to remove almost 98% of sand from such carpets, making it a standout performer for homes with similar carpets. On the other hand, the Tineco Pure One S11 emerged as the top recommended cordless vacuum, offering high performance at a value price of $400 or lower. Moving on to the black rice test, which simulates larger-sized debris like crumbs, the Tineco Pure One S11 and other models achieved a perfect rating across all three surfaces. Interestingly, value picks like the Shark Rocket Pet Pro and Moosoo XL-618 also performed well with bigger crumbs, despite their shortcomings in the sand tests.
The Tineco Pure One S11 was highlighted as the top performer in the black rice tests, earning a perfect rating across all floor types. The Shark Rocket Pet Pro and Moosoo XL-618, both value picks, also achieved perfect results in handling larger-sized debris. In contrast, the Bissell IconPet, which features headlights and a stylish black and green build, did not perform as well in the tests. The testing process involved running each vacuum in a straight line across all three floor types, conducting separate tests for sand and rice, and measuring the dirt and debris pickup by weighing the dust bin before and after each run.
