The post discusses an upcoming auction of artwork and memorabilia from the late singer, Tony Bennett, titled “Tony Bennett: A Life Well Lived.” The auction, which will be conducted online and live at the Ertegun Jazz Hall of Fame at Lincoln Center by Julien’s Auctions, will feature a treasure trove of items, including watercolor paintings of Central Park and sketches of iconic New York City buildings like the Empire State and Chrysler buildings.

Known for his artistic talent in addition to his music, Bennett’s impressionistic oils and watercolors often depicted natural settings such as Central Park, where his studio was located. One of the highlighted pieces is a 12-by-15-inch watercolor painting of Central Park, which has a pre-sale value of $800 but bidding has already reached $1,250. Another piece, a 12-by-9 grey paper drawing of the Empire State Building, is currently at $800 in bidding.

Bennett’s artwork also includes a sketch of the Chrysler Building on blue paper featuring an American flag. Bidding for this piece is up to $700. Bennett was a prolific artist, having sketched or painted daily and exhibited his work in galleries around the world. He was even chosen as the official artist for the 2001 Kentucky Derby and was commissioned by the United Nations for two paintings, including one for their 50th Anniversary celebration.

One of the most valuable items in the auction is a heartfelt note from Martin Luther King Jr. to Bennett, thanking him for his performance at the 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. This note has a pre-sale value of $20,000 to $30,000. David Goodman, CEO of Julien’s Auctions, described the auction as representing all the people and places that Bennett loved about his life and hometown of New York, stating that New York was his muse that inspired both his music and art.

Tony Bennett, a legendary pop, jazz, and big-band vocalist who won 20 Grammy Awards, passed away at the age of 96 after battling Alzheimer’s disease for seven years. His son and long-time manager, Danny Bennett, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to view the items in the collection, stating that they represent not only Tony’s remarkable life but also a part of American history. Beyond his musical legacy, Tony Bennett’s positive engagement with others and the integrity with which he lived each day are highlighted as a testament to the extraordinary person he was.
