During the vice presidential debate between Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, both candidates made questionable and sometimes false assertions. Vance claimed that there were illegal Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio overwhelming schools and hospitals, when in fact many of them have legal status under Temporary Protected Status. Walz accused Project 2025 of planning a “registry of pregnancies,” which is not part of the conservative blueprint. Vance denied supporting a national ban on abortions, despite previously stating he would like abortion to be illegal nationally. Walz admitted to misspeaking about being in China during the Tiananmen Square protests, when he was actually in Nebraska. Vance also downplayed the impact of carbon emissions on climate change, despite scientific consensus on the issue.

Walz claimed that Donald Trump had not paid federal taxes in 15 years, based on a New York Times investigation that found Trump paid no income taxes in 10 of the previous 15 years. However, the investigation also revealed that Trump paid $1.1 million in federal income taxes during his first three years as president. Vance praised Trump for working in a bipartisan manner to ensure access to affordable health care, despite Trump’s repeated promises to repeal Obamacare and his administration’s efforts to have the law struck down by the Supreme Court. Trump’s disdain for Obamacare was evident throughout his presidency, and he campaigned on a promise to repeal it, ultimately failing to do so by a single vote in the Senate.

The debate also touched on issues such as illegal immigration, abortion, and climate change, with both candidates offering differing perspectives on these topics. Vance’s claims about illegal immigrants overwhelming communities and Walz’s assertions about Project 2025’s plans for a pregnancy registry were rebuked by fact-checkers. Vance’s denial of supporting a national abortion ban contradicted his previous statements on the issue. Walz’s admission of misspeaking about his whereabouts during the Tiananmen Square protests raised questions about his credibility. The candidates’ differing views on carbon emissions and their impact on climate change highlighted the divide on this critical issue.

Overall, the vice presidential debate between Walz and Vance showcased the contrasting beliefs and priorities of the two candidates. Walz’s focus on fact-checking Vance’s statements and highlighting inconsistencies in his claims demonstrated a commitment to accuracy and transparency. Vance’s defense of Trump’s approach to health care and denial of certain policy positions underscored his support for the former president’s agenda. The debate served as an opportunity for voters to evaluate the candidates’ positions on key issues and make informed decisions about who they believe will best represent their interests.
