Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day on April 15th, honoring the legendary player who broke baseball’s “color barrier” with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Since 2004, every player and coach in uniform wears Robinson’s number 42 on this day. This year, players from the Dodgers and Washington Nationals gathered around a statue of Robinson outside Dodger Stadium, where managers Dave Roberts and Dave Martinez addressed the group, continuing a tradition of educating players on baseball history.

A special tribute video titled “Pasadena Fields” was featured in all ballparks and MLB platforms on Monday, adding another layer of remembrance to Robinson’s legacy. In 1997, MLB retired Robinson’s number 42 in every ballpark, making it the only universally retired number across the league. To honor Robinson, Nike released a new version of its Air Max 1 shoe inspired by the Brooklyn Dodgers color scheme, featuring a unique ’42’ diamond patch on the tongue and various design elements paying homage to Robinson.

MLB hosted a volunteer event at the Jackie Robinson Museum in Manhattan with Foster Love, where employees assembled gift boxes for donation to children at a local foster care agency. In Queens, the Mets celebrated Jackie Robinson Day with their second-annual Black Legacy Game honoring former Black players and hosting a panel discussion featuring rappers DJ Webstar & Mims on Robinson’s impact on the world of rap. David Robinson, the son of Jackie Robinson, threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Mets’ game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, caught by Butch Huskey, while Jackie’s 101-year-old wife, Rachel Robinson, was also present for the game.

Each MLB team celebrated Jackie Robinson Day in their own way, highlighting the significance of Robinson’s contributions to the sport and society. The Phillies honored pioneer Hank Mason, the first Black pitcher to pitch for the team in 1958, while the Jackie Robinson Museum in Manhattan hosted a volunteer event. The Dodgers and Nationals came together at Dodger Stadium to pay respect to Robinson, showcasing the unity and reverence shared by players and teams throughout the league on this historic day.

The commemorations of Jackie Robinson Day play a crucial role in educating current players and fans on the impact of Robinson’s legacy on the sport of baseball and beyond. From special tribute videos and unique merchandise releases to volunteer events and panel discussions, MLB teams and organizations continue to find new ways to honor and remember Robinson’s groundbreaking achievements. By embracing Robinson’s historical significance, Major League Baseball upholds his legacy and celebrates the ongoing progress towards equality and diversity in the sport.
