The United States worked with the United Nations and Israel to establish safe delivery routes to distribute aid unloaded from a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza. However, none of the aid has reached the broader Palestinian population yet due to logistical challenges. The trucks delivering aid were intercepted by desperate Gazans over the weekend, leading to the suspension of delivery operations. The US hoped to transport 500 tons of aid per day but fell short of that target due to various challenges.

The Pentagon acknowledged that some of the initial aid brought into Gaza was intercepted by individuals who took it off the vehicles. Despite facing hurdles with the pier, the US is continuing efforts to get aid into Gaza through land routes as well. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is in discussions with Israeli officials regarding potential land crossings to deliver aid. The US has made specific requests to Israel to facilitate aid distribution, including allowing aid scanned in Cyprus to be sent directly to the Israeli port of Ashdod, bypassing Egypt.

The US has also conducted air drops of humanitarian aid into Gaza in partnership with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. Over 370 pallets of aid were distributed in Gaza on Tuesday alone. While the frequency of air drops in the future remains uncertain, the US is committed to working with international partners to ensure aid reaches the Palestinian people in need. The Pentagon emphasized that the efforts to provide aid to Gaza are not solely a US military endeavor but involve a coordinated interagency and international effort.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has continued to worsen, with the entire population of 2.2 million facing acute food insecurity. The closure of vital border crossings in recent weeks has further exacerbated the crisis. The US Agency for International Development has highlighted the urgent need for more aid to move into Gaza. The US has faced challenges in planning around Israel’s security operations in Rafah and logistical constraints like sea and weather conditions that limit the use of the temporary pier.

As the US and its partners work to overcome these obstacles, conversations with Israeli officials regarding aid distribution continue. The US has been engaged in discussions to address concerns and ensure the safe and efficient delivery of aid to Gaza. While challenges persist, efforts are ongoing to find alternative routes and solutions to ensure that aid reaches those in need. The US is committed to supporting the Palestinian people during this critical time and will continue to work towards providing essential humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
