“Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” is a documentary that tells the powerful life story of actor Christopher Reeve, who found fame playing Superman in the late 1970s and 1980s. However, in 1995, a devastating horse riding accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. Despite this tragedy, Reeve spent the rest of his life working as a disability activist focused on finding a cure for spinal cord injuries. The movie, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, features candid interviews with Reeve’s children, Matthew, Alexandra, and Will, as well as footage of the actor with his late wife, Dana, who supported him through his struggles.

In the trailer for the documentary, Reeve recalls a moment where Dana’s love helped him find his will to live again after his injury. He expresses his initial feelings of being a burden and unable to do things he used to enjoy, like skiing or making love to Dana. However, Dana reassured him that he was still the same person and that she loved him, which gave him hope and strength to keep going. Reeve’s children also share memories of their father’s athleticism before the accident, with footage showing him engaging in various sports and activities, such as tennis, swimming, and horseback riding.

The movie includes interviews with some of Reeve’s Hollywood friends, such as Susan Sarandon, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Daniels, and Glenn Close, who reflect on his legacy and the special bond he shared with late actor Robin Williams. Reeve’s kids recall moments with their father before the accident, including a heartbreaking memory of saying goodbye to him before the tragic event that left him paralyzed. Despite the challenges he faced, Reeve’s determination to continue living a meaningful life and his impact as a disability activist are highlighted in the documentary.

“Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” is set to air in select theaters on September 21 and September 25, in honor of Reeve’s birthday. The film pays tribute to Reeve’s enduring legacy and his unwavering commitment to raising awareness about spinal cord injuries and advocating for research towards finding a cure. Through heartfelt interviews, candid footage, and personal anecdotes from Reeve’s family and friends, the documentary provides a touching and inspiring portrayal of the actor’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Reeve’s story serves as a reminder of the power of love, hope, and perseverance in overcoming life’s greatest challenges.
