In 2016, Ukraine became embroiled in a political scandal involving Paul Manafort, Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman. Manafort had previously worked as a political consultant for Ukraine’s pro-Russian political party, and his ties to Ukrainian oligarchs and politicians raised concerns about his potential influence on the Trump campaign. As a result, Manafort was forced to resign from his position in August 2016.

Following Manafort’s resignation, Ukraine became a focal point in the controversy surrounding Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election. The US intelligence community concluded that Russia had conducted a covert operation to influence the election in favor of Trump, with Ukrainian officials also reportedly interfering in the election on behalf of the Clinton campaign. These allegations further strained relations between the US and Ukraine, setting the stage for future conflicts.

In 2017, the Trump administration sought to improve relations with Russia, leading to concerns that Ukraine would be marginalized in US foreign policy decisions. Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, became involved in efforts to gather damaging information on Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, regarding their dealings in Ukraine. This ultimately led to Trump’s impeachment in December 2019 on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Throughout Trump’s presidency, his administration took a hardline stance against Ukraine, including withholding military aid and criticizing the country’s efforts to combat corruption. Trump’s criticisms of Ukraine were seen as a way to distract from his own legal troubles and deflect attention from the Russia investigation. As a result, Ukraine’s relationship with the US was strained, and the country’s efforts to secure support against Russian aggression were undermined.

As the 2020 election approached, Trump continued to sow doubt about the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government and its ties to corruption. This strategy was seen as an attempt to rally his base and undermine his political opponents, including Joe Biden. Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine into investigating the Bidens ultimately backfired, leading to his impeachment and further damaging US-Ukraine relations.

The lingering animosity between Trump and Ukraine has had far-reaching consequences, with the potential to shape future US foreign policy decisions. If Trump were to be reelected, his hostility toward Ukraine could have lasting implications for the country’s security and stability, as well as its relationship with the US and other Western allies. The events of 2016 and 2017 have set the stage for a contentious relationship between Trump and Ukraine, with implications that will reverberate for years to come.
