Olivia Munn underwent a special cancer protocol for egg retrieval after being diagnosed with cancer. Due to the risk of encouraging cancer cells to grow, she was put on a lower dose of hormones instead of hyper-ovulating. Despite the cautious approach, the doctors were able to retrieve seven eggs, down three from the goal, with the hope of creating one healthy embryo. Munn and her partner, John Mulaney, waited anxiously for the results, with Munn making it clear that the future of their family rested on the viability of these embryos. When they received the news that they had two healthy embryos, they were overjoyed as it meant she didn’t have to put herself at risk for another retrieval.

Munn shared her cancer diagnosis on Instagram in March, encouraging women to use the Lifetime Risk Test to calculate their own risk and schedule doctor appointments. The call to action was successful, with over 23,000 people sharing their stories. Munn and Mulaney are now focused on the present and protecting their little life. Mulaney expressed his support for Munn sharing her story, acknowledging that the risk assessment test had saved her life. Munn is cautiously optimistic about the future of their embryos, recognizing that they have options for fighting cancer and expanding their family.

Munn reflects on the process of using a surrogate to carry their child, acknowledging that it is a different experience from being pregnant with her own baby. She describes the teamwork involved in pregnancy and the effort to make the baby’s life come true. With a surrogate, she understands that they must find someone they trust to carry the pregnancy on their behalf. She no longer fears the idea of using a surrogate as she is unable to carry a baby herself, and sees it as a viable option for building their family. Munn expresses gratitude for having options to fight cancer and have more children if they choose, recognizing that not everyone has access to these opportunities.

The journey Munn and Mulaney have gone through has made them appreciate the options they have for both fighting cancer and expanding their family. Munn’s experience with cancer and fertility treatments has brought them closer as a couple and made them grateful for the possibilities available to them. Munn’s decision to share her story on social media has not only raised awareness about cancer risk assessments but has also provided support and encouragement to others going through similar experiences. As they navigate the next steps in their journey, Munn and Mulaney are focused on protecting their growing family while cherishing the blessings they have received.
