Hope Solo, the former goalkeeper for the U.S. women’s national soccer team, has faced a series of challenges over the years that have led to her fall from soccer stardom. In 2012, her now-husband, Jerramy Stevens, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting her, and the couple shocked fans by getting married the following day. Solo herself was arrested in 2014 after an alleged domestic violence incident, and Stevens was arrested in 2015 for driving under the influence. In 2022, Solo was arrested for driving while intoxicated with her twins in the car and later entered an in-patient alcohol treatment facility.
In September 2024, Netflix released a documentary about Solo titled “Untold: Hope Solo vs. U.S. Soccer,” which explores the mix of glory and scandal in her career. Solo had a successful career, winning two Olympic gold medals and a FIFA World Cup title before being forced to retire in 2016. She became the first goalkeeper, man or woman, to record 100 shutouts in international competition. However, her unsportsmanlike comments after the team’s loss at the 2016 Rio Olympics led to her contract being terminated by U.S. Soccer.
Solo is married to Jerramy Stevens, a former NFL player, and the couple has faced legal troubles together. They have twins, born in 2020. Solo has been arrested twice, once in 2014 on accusations of hitting her half-sister and nephew during a family gathering, and again in 2022 for driving while intoxicated with her children in the car. She spent 30 days at an in-patient rehab facility to address her issues with alcohol.
Former teammates of Solo have commented on her difficult personality but acknowledged her exceptional soccer skills. Solo has also faced controversy outside of sports, including a clash with her dance partner on Dancing with the Stars. Following her forced retirement from soccer, Solo sued the U.S. Soccer Federation for violating the federal Equal Pay Act, a case that has yet to go to trial. She continues to advocate for women’s sports issues.
In May 2023, Solo was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame and currently lives with her husband and twins in North Carolina. Despite the challenges she has faced in her personal life, Solo remains a respected figure in the world of women’s sports and continues to speak out on important issues affecting female athletes.
