The 2011 female-driven comedy film Bridesmaids, written by Kristen Wiig, Annie Mumolo, and Paul Feig, follows Annie, a single, underachieving woman who becomes her lifelong best friend Lillian’s maid of honor. The star-studded cast includes comedic powerhouses such as Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon-Covey. Since its release, fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a possible sequel, but Wiig has consistently denied the possibility, stating that the story had a proper ending and should be left as is.

Wiig has been vocal about her disinterest in a Bridesmaids sequel, stating that the story was beloved to her for many reasons and should be allowed to exist as it is. Even Jon Hamm, who appeared in the film as Annie’s friend-with-benefits, has expressed doubts about the likelihood of a follow-up. Other cast members, like Wendi McLendon-Covey, have echoed Wiig’s sentiment, indicating that a sequel is not in the cards. However, some, like Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne, have expressed willingness to return if the entire original cast were on board.

Annie Mumolo, who co-wrote Bridesmaids with Wiig, has stated that a sequel would only be worth pursuing if the story was right and that creating a follow-up could take years due to the time it takes to make movies. Maya Rudolph, who played Lillian in the film, has mentioned that while she had a great time filming Bridesmaids, the decision about a sequel ultimately lies with Wiig. Despite fan interest and the desire of some cast members to return, Wiig has remained steadfast in her decision to not pursue a sequel to the beloved comedy.

Melissa McCarthy has expressed eagerness to reunite with the Bridesmaids cast for a sequel, citing the magical experience of working with the group of women on the first film. She has stated that she would be willing to return for a sequel at any age, emphasizing the bond she shares with her co-stars. Rose Byrne has also voiced her willingness to return for a sequel if the original cast were on board, acknowledging the challenge of following up on a film that is so beloved and magical. Despite the enthusiasm of some cast members, it appears that a Bridesmaids sequel may not be in the cards, as Wiig and others have maintained their stance against it.
