Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s drone tsar and digital transformation minister, has indicated that AI drone prototypes will be deployed on the front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine by the end of the year. Recent reports have highlighted Ukraine’s ability to conduct drone attacks deep into Russian territory, showcasing the extensive reach of their drone capabilities.
In response to the evolving drone technology, counter-drone measures have also been developed, with jamming being a key tool used by both Kyiv and Moscow to disrupt enemy drones. AI, particularly machine vision, is being employed to improve accuracy and navigation, especially in the face of jamming attempts. By equipping drones with AI, the goal is for them to operate independently and reach their targets without the need for constant communication with operators or satellites for navigation. This capability provides significant advantages on the battlefield, especially when facing widespread counter-drone technologies.
The rapid integration of experimental AI into drones in Ukraine is driven by the urgent need to gain an advantage over adversaries in a time of war. Unlike Western countries, where there are more safeguards and discussions surrounding the use of AI, Ukraine is employing this technology quickly and without many obstacles in order to stay ahead. However, the unpredictability of AI poses risks, as there is always a possibility that the computer could act unexpectedly or unsafely. Moscow has also announced its intentions to incorporate AI into its drones, with military and volunteer groups working on developing this technology as part of an AI arms race.
Both Russia and Ukraine are expected to quickly adopt each other’s AI advancements, intensifying the AI race and reflecting the broader global competition for AI technology. The use of AI-enabled drones in warfare has raised concerns about the potential for escalating conflicts and the implications of deploying such advanced technology in combat situations.
