However, there was no significant correlation between university sustainability performance and environmental sustainability in their home communities. The researchers discovered that while universities were making progress on some sustainability measures, they were also associated with a decline in responsible consumption and production, such as increased air pollution and release of toxic chemicals in their surrounding areas.
Despite the strong connection between university sustainability performance and innovation, reducing poverty, creating economic opportunities, and reducing inequality in communities, the study suggests that universities have not yet fully realized their potential to contribute to broader sustainable transformations on a large scale. The findings highlight that there are still many opportunities for higher education institutions to make a greater impact on their surrounding communities, especially in the face of ongoing challenges like climate change.

However, the evidence suggests that universities have the potential to be key drivers of economic development and innovation in their communities.
