The death of 17-year-old Henry Clay High School student Emmanuel Mwakadi is under investigation following his collapse and subsequent death after complaining of head and neck pain sustained while breaking up a fight in a school bathroom. The Fayette County Coroner’s office confirmed his identity and stated that no foul play is suspected in his death. Emmanuel was taken to UK Chandler Hospital, where he passed away on Friday. Lexington attorney Justin Peterson, representing Emmanuel’s family, mentioned that the incident occurred between first and second period when Emmanuel intervened in a fight and later collapsed in the classroom, leading to emergency medical personnel being called to the scene.

Lexington Fire Major Derek Roberts stated that the fire department was dispatched to the school in response to a call about a seizure at 10:09 a.m. Friday. Peterson mentioned that there will be an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Emmanuel’s death, including whether the fight in the bathroom, a potential delay in treatment, and the adequacy of the medical care provided may have contributed to the tragic outcome. While Lexington Police did not confirm if they were formally investigating the incident, Peterson indicated that he would be contacting the police, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, and Fayette County Public Schools regarding the matter.

The lack of communication from the school regarding the incident has caused distress for Emmanuel’s family, according to Peterson. He stated that school officials have not reached out to the family to discuss what happened, offer condolences or express sympathy for their loss. However, Fayette County Public Schools district spokesperson Dia Davidson-Smith mentioned that school leadership, teachers, and district interpreters have been in constant communication with the family since the medical crisis occurred in the classroom. The school community expressed grief over the loss of the student and extended sincere condolences on behalf of the superintendent and the entire FCPS family.

As the investigation into Emmanuel’s death continues, questions remain about the circumstances that led to his collapse and subsequent passing. The family and their attorney are seeking answers regarding the events that transpired, the response time for emergency medical services, and the support provided by the school following the tragic incident. The community at Henry Clay High School mourns the loss of the student and offers support to his family during this difficult time. The investigation will aim to determine the factors that may have contributed to Emmanuel’s untimely death and to provide closure and justice for his loved ones.
