Conservative media personality Steve Bannon promised to protect Rudy Giuliani, former lawyer to Donald Trump, before Giuliani received a court summons in connection to the Arizona fake electors case against him. Giuliani was served the summons on the night of his early 80th birthday celebration in Florida, where guests had just finished singing “Happy Birthday” to him. Bannon reiterated his support for Giuliani during a livestream for his birthday, stating that the government was attempting to pressure and smear Giuliani, claiming that America needed him to be a major part of the 2024 elections. Bannon also criticized Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, calling the persecution of Giuliani and other Trump allies a sham.

The indictment against Giuliani and others alleges that they conspired to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory in Arizona and prevent the lawful transfer of the presidency to Biden. The scheme was intended to keep Trump in office against the will of Arizona voters, risking depriving them of their right to vote and have their votes counted. Giuliani and others were also indicted in a separate case in Georgia for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2020 election results in that state. Both Trump and Giuliani pleaded not guilty in the Georgia case. Giuliani faced financial troubles when he filed for bankruptcy in December 2023 after being ordered to pay $148 million for defaming two former Georgia election workers by falsely accusing them of election fraud.

Despite the legal challenges facing Giuliani, Bannon expressed his determination to prevent the government from putting Giuliani in jail, emphasizing Giuliani’s importance in the upcoming elections. Bannon condemned the actions of Mayes, claiming that the persecution of Giuliani and other Trump allies was unfounded and politically motivated. Mayes, a Democrat, won her own election fairly by a close margin and underwent a recount to confirm her victory. A spokesperson for the Arizona attorney general’s office confirmed that efforts were made to serve Giuliani a summons, leading to him being served at his birthday party event. Giuliani’s head of security defended Giuliani, stating that he would never run from any legal matters and that he was not hiding from receiving the subpoena.

The ongoing legal battles and allegations surrounding Giuliani and other Trump allies highlight the contentious aftermath of the 2020 election and the continued efforts to challenge its results. Giuliani’s bankruptcy and defamation lawsuits further complicate his legal situation, while his steadfast support from Bannon and others in conservative media reflects the polarized political environment in the United States. The outcome of these legal cases and the impact on Giuliani’s reputation and political future remain uncertain, as the debate over the legitimacy of the 2020 election continues to shape the political landscape in the country.
