SteelSeries has released the third generation of its Apex Pro keyboards, featuring new OmniPoint 3.0 switches and added capabilities such as Rapid Tap and Protection Mode. These keyboards come in three models: a full-size keyboard for $200, a TKL model for $190, and a wireless TKL model for $250. The OmniPoint switches allow for customization of actuation and reset points, with improved sensors for increased precision and consistency. The actuation point remains at 0.1mm, providing nearly instantaneous keypress registration.

To address the issue of accidental keypresses and repeats with fast switches, SteelSeries has introduced Protection Mode, which temporarily lowers the actuation level of surrounding keys to prevent accidental presses from registering. The company has also added Rapid Tap, also known as SOCD, which fixes the problem of characters stalling out when two keys trigger opposite movements. This feature automatically releases the first key when the second keypress registers, allowing for quick character movement.

Both Protection Mode and Rapid Tap can be accessed through the SteelSeries GG software, which also includes GG Quicksets for preset actuation levels and optimized features by game. Hardware upgrades in the new Apex Pro keyboards include improved stabilizers for reduced wobble, as well as changes in lube and added foam for a lower-frequency sound and different feel while typing. The wireless model offers a faster connection to the 2.4GHz dongle, but the connection types and battery life have not changed from the previous model.

Overall, the third generation of the Apex Pro keyboards from SteelSeries introduces new features and improvements to enhance the gaming experience. With customizable actuation and reset points, as well as innovative capabilities like Rapid Tap and Protection Mode, users can expect a smoother and more responsive gameplay. The addition of GG Quicksets in the software allows for easy optimization for different games, while hardware upgrades ensure a more stable and comfortable typing experience. Despite some similarities to previous models, the new Apex Pro keyboards offer enough enhancements to appeal to both existing users and those looking for a high-performance gaming keyboard.
