The 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver featured celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, and Kanye West. Fast forward to the 2020 convention in Chicago, and there is still A-list enthusiasm for the party’s presidential ticket. High-profile speakers, such as John Legend and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, are set to be part of the event, along with a benefit concert featuring Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Notable actors expected to attend include Tim Daly, Uzo Aduba, Anthony Anderson, and more.

Speculation has been circulating about potential appearances by Taylor Swift and Beyoncé at the convention, both of whom endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket in 2020. Representatives for Swift and Beyoncé did not respond to requests for comment, and spokespeople for the DNC and the Harris campaign did not confirm the rumors. Beyoncé and Swift have both been involved in supporting Democratic politicians in the past, with Beyoncé performing at Obama’s inauguration in 2013 and headlining a concert for Hillary Clinton in 2016 with her husband Jay-Z.

Swift is currently in the midst of a European tour but could theoretically make it to Chicago for the convention’s final two nights. Fans, known as Swifties, are eagerly anticipating her potential involvement in the event. As part of the convention’s activities, attendees can make friendship bracelets inspired by Swift’s song lyrics. There is also a group called Swifties for Kamala, which organically mobilized online in support of Kamala Harris when President Biden dropped out of the race.

The Harris campaign has recognized the influence of social media creators and has been in touch with groups like Swifties for Kamala. More than 200 content creators have been credentialed to cover the event, highlighting a strategic effort to reach younger voters through social media. While A-list celebrities like Swift and Beyoncé may draw attention, the convention will likely break records for social media followings on the convention room floor. The definition of celebrity involvement in politics is evolving, with social media influencers playing an increasingly important role in engaging with voters.
