The New York Times has introduced a new version of their popular Connections puzzle game, focusing on sports-related words. Called Connections: Sports Edition, this new game is currently in beta testing to gauge its popularity before potentially becoming a permanent addition to the site’s Games app. Players can enjoy the game for free for the next few weeks and see if it will stick around.

In Connections: Sports Edition, players are given 16 words and must group them into four categories that are somehow connected. The twist with this version is that all the words and categories have a sports tie-in, making it a challenge even for those who aren’t sports enthusiasts. The difficulty levels vary, with yellow being the easiest and purple the hardest, but players won’t know which group is which until they solve the puzzle.

To solve Connections: Sports Edition, it helps to have some knowledge about different sports and athletes, as the words may include player names, team names, or sport-related activities. The game will sometimes try to trick players by using sports-related words that can fit into multiple groups, adding to the challenge. Overall, the goal is to use logic and deduction to correctly group the words based on their connections.

Hints are provided for each group in the Connections: Sports Edition puzzle, ranging from easy to difficult. Players must use these hints to determine the common thread among the words in each group. For example, hints for today’s puzzle include categories like “Actions on a field goal attempt” for the yellow group and “Brazilian soccer legends” for the purple group. By using these clues, players can work towards solving the puzzle.

The completed puzzle for a given day will reveal the answers for each group, showing how the words were connected based on their sports-related themes. Today’s answers, for example, included words related to actions on a field goal attempt, MLB teams on scoreboards, schools with the most men’s NCAA tournament titles, and Brazilian soccer legends. Players can test their sports knowledge and puzzle-solving skills with each new edition of Connections: Sports Edition.
