The University of Regina Cougars have added another talented sister duo to their team, with Kyu and Izzi Fust joining the roster. The last time the team had sisters playing together was in 2018 with the Giles sisters. Both Kyu and Izzi are from Winnipeg, just like the Giles sisters. Kyu, the older of the two, was the player of the year in Manitoba during her Grade 12 year, while Izzi achieved the same title last year. Coach Dave Taylor praised their talent and skill, noting that having players of their caliber can greatly benefit the team. Kyu, who joined the team last year, missed playing with her sister after they played together at Dakota Collegiate. Having Izzi on the team now provides her with a sense of comfort and familiarity on the court.

Many people assumed that once Kyu committed to playing for Regina, Izzi would automatically follow suit. However, Izzi had multiple offers from schools across the country and ultimately chose Regina. While Kyu played a role in her decision, Izzi also wanted to get out of Manitoba while still remaining close enough to home for visits. She was drawn to Regina’s successful season and saw her sister’s growth on the team as something she wanted to be a part of. Coach Taylor is excited to have both sisters on the court this season, highlighting their different playing styles and how they can contribute to the team in different ways. Kyu is seen as a defensive asset while Izzi is expected to provide offensive support.

The closeness of the Fust sisters is evident in their decision to play together on the same team. Having played together in high school, Kyu expressed how having her sister on the team brings back a sense of home and comfort for her. Despite missing out on playing together last year, the opportunity to share the court with her sister once again is something Kyu cherishes. Izzi, on the other hand, saw Regina as a place where she could continue her basketball development and be a part of a successful team. She looks up to her sister and wants to follow in her footsteps in terms of growth and progress as a player. The bond between the Fust sisters extends beyond the basketball court, adding an extra layer of motivation and support for both players.

The presence of talented sibling pairs like the Fust sisters adds a dynamic element to the University of Regina Cougars’ team. Coach Taylor recognizes the potential that both Kyu and Izzi bring to the team, with their individual strengths complementing each other on the court. Kyu’s defensive prowess and ability to score, coupled with Izzi’s offensive skills, create a well-rounded combination that can greatly benefit the team’s performance. Their shared experiences and mutual support system as sisters can also contribute to a positive team dynamic and foster a sense of unity among the players. As the season progresses, the Fust sisters have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the team’s success and continue the legacy of talented sibling pairs within the Cougars program.

The decision for Izzi to join her sister in playing for Regina reflects a combination of personal and athletic factors. While Kyu’s presence on the team played a role in Izzi’s decision, other factors such as the team’s performance, location, and opportunities for growth also influenced her choice. Ultimately, Izzi saw Regina as a fitting place for her to continue her basketball journey and contribute to a team that aligns with her aspirations and goals as a player. The sisters’ shared experiences and connection on and off the court contribute to a sense of camaraderie within the team, fostering a supportive environment that can enhance their individual and collective performance. With the upcoming season, the Fust sisters have the chance to make a significant impact and leave their mark on the University of Regina Cougars’ basketball program.
