North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has reportedly regained weight and is believed to be suffering from obesity-related health issues such as high blood pressure and diabetes, according to South Korea’s spy agency. Despite previously appearing to have lost weight in 2021, recent state media footage shows that Kim has gained back the weight. Known for heavy drinking and smoking, Kim’s family has a history of heart problems, with both his father and grandfather dying from heart issues.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) informed lawmakers in a closed-door briefing that Kim is estimated to weigh around 308 pounds again, putting him in a high-risk group for heart disease. Lawmakers were told that Kim has been exhibiting symptoms of high blood pressure and diabetes since his early 30s, with his obesity likely being linked to his unhealthy lifestyle choices such as drinking, smoking, and stress. The NIS also revealed that North Korean officials have been seeking new medicines abroad for Kim’s suspected health conditions.

North Korea’s secretive nature makes it challenging for outsiders to ascertain the exact state of Kim’s health, with the NIS not always being reliable in confirming developments in the country. Kim’s health is closely monitored outside North Korea due to concerns about the lack of a designated successor who would take charge of the country’s nuclear arsenal should Kim become incapacitated. The NIS also mentioned that Kim’s preteen daughter, Kim Ju Ae, is increasingly appearing alongside her father in public events, potentially indicating her role as his heir apparent.

Speculation about Kim Ju Ae has grown as she continues to accompany her father to high-profile events, with state media highlighting her political standing and close relationship with Kim Jong-un. The NIS noted that a significant portion of Kim Ju Ae’s public activities involve attending military events with her father. However, her status as the successor is not officially confirmed, and there is a possibility that she could be replaced by one of her siblings in the future.

Despite attempts to conceal information about Kim Jong-un’s health status, the recent reports from South Korea’s NIS suggest that the North Korean leader is facing health challenges due to his obesity. With a family history of heart problems and unhealthy habits like heavy drinking and smoking, Kim’s wellbeing is a topic of concern for observers outside North Korea. The ongoing speculation about his daughter’s role as a potential successor adds another layer of intrigue to the situation.
