Nicholas Rajkovich, a professor at the School of Architecture and Planning at the University at Buffalo, emphasizes the importance of cleaning both the inside and outside of your fridge for improved efficiency. While the refrigerator only accounts for about 4% of energy use in the average home, every kilowatt-hour saved can lead to cost savings. Ensuring proper airflow in your fridge and freezer by removing expired food and checking for ice buildup is essential for optimal performance.

One key aspect of maintaining a clean and efficient refrigerator is to clean the condenser coils, which are responsible for transferring heat from the inside to the outside. This process will vary depending on the model of your refrigerator, but generally involves unplugging the fridge, removing the panel covering the coils, vacuuming and brushing off dust and dirt, and then reassembling everything. If you have an older fridge that needs replacing, consider investing in an Energy Star-certified model, which is about 9% more efficient than minimum requirements. Energy Star also provides tips such as setting the temperature to 35-38 degrees Fahrenheit, placing the fridge in a cool spot, and allowing air circulation behind it for optimal efficiency.
