The small village of Love in Saskatchewan is looking to establish itself as a unique wedding destination, embracing its name and history. With a population of 72, the village decided to fully promote the passion in their namesake by building a new wedding chapel. The idea for Love spread and streets were renamed to Lover’s Lane, Valentine Avenue, and Hearts Delight Street. Mayor Shelley Vallier wanted to turn the village into a “village of love” and through hard work, donations, fundraising, and generosity, the vision is becoming a reality. The chapel, a refurbished old Canadian Pacific Railway bunkhouse, now stands as a symbol of love in Love.
The project to establish Love as a wedding destination cost more than $65,000, with the chapel boasting benches that can seat 50 people. Love’s history dates back to the early 1930s when families sought refuge from the Great Depression and the village eventually grew to a peak population of around 250 people with various businesses and amenities. The name “Love” has two possible origins, one involving a young couple who garnered attention for their affections, and the other linked to the first train conductor, Tom Love. Despite the decline of the lumbering industry in the area, the love for Love has endured, with connections to the village prompting support for initiatives like building the chapel and hosting annual festivals.
While the population has begun to increase in recent years and children once again roam the streets, challenges remain for Love. The village recently discovered the need for a costly roof replacement for its local hall, delaying plans for a honeymoon suite and other romantic spots. However, Love continues to celebrate love with initiatives like special Love stamps for wedding invites and Valentine cards. The local post office receives letters from individuals all over the world seeking the Love stamp, marking the global reach of Love’s romantic reputation. Despite hurdles, the community remains dedicated to upholding love as a core value.
Looking to the future, Love aims to become a destination that celebrates love and creates lasting memories for couples tying the knot. The village’s dedication to maintaining and growing, despite challenges and setbacks, is evident in the efforts to establish Love as a wedding destination. With support from current and former residents, as well as visitors from afar, Love is striving to fulfill its mission of promoting love and creating a special place for couples to share their love.
