San Jose, California has been identified as the top city for small businesses in the United States, according to the 2024 Biz2Credit Top Cities for Small Business Study. This financial analysis examined data from over 60,000 companies across the country, focusing on factors such as annual revenue, credit score, age of business, and other financial indicators. San Jose, known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley, is a hub of innovation and creativity that is home to approximately 66,000 businesses and 439,000 workers in various sectors. The city’s high concentration of high-tech companies, along with a well-educated population, contributes to its vibrant small business ecosystem.

San Jose’s thriving small business community is supported by the presence of major tech corporations like Adobe, Cisco, and eBay, which create a conducive environment for small businesses to grow and serve their employees. The city’s Office of Economic Development offers a range of programs to assist entrepreneurs in developing new ideas and seizing economic opportunities. Additionally, Work2future provides services such as customized training and on-the-job training to support local businesses and enhance employment opportunities in the region.

Other top cities for small businesses include San Francisco, Seattle, Colorado Springs, and Greater Bridgeport, among others. The study found that the leading industries in these cities are accommodation and food services, other services, and construction. Furthermore, the average annual revenue for small businesses increased by 10.4%, while expenses rose by 13.8%, resulting in a slight decrease in average earnings. The average credit score also increased to 652 from 641, indicating the financial health of small businesses in these cities.

With eight new cities making the list this year, including Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, and Phoenix, there have been notable shifts in the rankings compared to the previous year. Five cities, including San Jose and Seattle, have seen improvement in their rankings, while others have dropped, such as San Francisco and San Diego. These changes reflect the evolving landscape of small business opportunities in different regions across the country.
