A small, unassuming fossil discovered on McFaddin Beach in Texas has expanded the known range of Homotherium, a large cat that roamed the Earth tens of thousands of years ago. Led by John Moretti, a doctoral student at The University of Texas at Austin, the research was published in The Anatomical Record. The fossil, initially mistaken for a rock, was found to belong to a Homotherium due to a hidden canine tooth that had not yet fully erupted. This discovery sheds light on the ecological landscape of the Late Pleistocene, indicating that these big cats roamed a now-submerged continental shelf that connected Texas and Florida.

Homotherium, similar in size to a jaguar with distinctive saber-like canine teeth, roamed across Africa, Eurasia, and the Americas.
