Lukas Walton, heir to the Walmart fortune, has raised $600 million in outside funding for his climate-focused investment firm S2G, marking the first time the firm has brought in outside capital since its founding in 2014. Walton, estimated to be worth $27.8 billion, has already invested $3 billion into S2G and other ventures through his umbrella group Builders Vision. S2G now holds $2.5 billion in assets and has a diverse portfolio of over 100 companies focused on sustainability, including green cement maker Brimstone, Apeel Sciences, and Moleaer.

Builders Vision was established by Walton in 2021 to support his investment, philanthropic, and advocacy efforts focused on addressing climate change, promoting sustainable farming and clean energy, and conserving the world’s oceans. Walton stated that in order to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time, capital needs to be channeled into innovative solutions at a faster pace. The group has been working towards this goal and aims to catalyze more investors and philanthropists to join their efforts in creating positive environmental impacts.

Through Builders Vision, Walton has focused on deploying capital to combat climate change by investing in sustainable solutions and technologies. The group realized that despite having significant resources, the issues they were tackling were so large that more investors and collaborators were needed to achieve meaningful impact. This led to the decision to bring in outside investors for S2G, which has now raised $600 million in funding to further support its mission of creating a more sustainable future.

Chicago-based S2G recently announced the launch of S2G Investment Advisers, as a registered investment advisor and standalone business. This move signifies a new phase for the firm, which will continue to work closely with Builders Vision and focus on investments that benefit both the planet and human health. The firm’s managing partners, Aaron Rudberg, Sanjeev Krishnan, and Chuck Templeton, will continue to lead S2G as it expands its capacity to support projects that contribute positively to the environment and human well-being.

Walton, a grandson of Walmart founder Sam Walton, has always been dedicated to sustainability and environmental advocacy. As the environment program committee chair at the Walton Family Foundation, he has been actively involved in supporting initiatives that promote green technologies, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy. Through Builders Vision, Walton has helped develop over 170 sustainable products and technologies and has facilitated the installation of 15,685 megawatts of renewable energy capacity.

In an impact report released last fall, Builders Vision highlighted its efforts in removing or preventing over 4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, equivalent to the annual emissions of about 870,000 passenger cars. The group’s work has had a significant impact on promoting sustainability and supporting innovative solutions to combat climate change. With the recent influx of outside funding for S2G, Walton and his team are poised to further accelerate their efforts towards creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
