A Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber crashed in southwestern Russia during a scheduled training flight in the Volgograd region. The crew managed to eject from the aircraft, which crashed in an unpopulated area due to a technical malfunction. Images circulated online show a large scorched area and smoke at the crash site, though their authenticity could not be independently verified. Russia has used its Su-34 aircraft extensively in operations against Ukrainian forces since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Noncombat losses of Russian aircraft due to technical failures have been reported, including previous crashes of Su-34 jets in mountainous and residential areas.

In mid-June, a Russian Su-34 crashed into a mountain during a training flight in North Ossetia-Alania, resulting in the deaths of the two crew members. Additionally, there have been other accidents involving Russian aircraft, such as a Su-30 crash in the Kaliningrad exclave in August 2023 and in Irkutsk in October 2022, resulting in the deaths of the crew members in each incident.

Russian authorities and media have attributed these accidents to technical malfunctions.
